2017 New Moon Calendar with 12 new moons

The New Moon 2017 Calendar had 12 new moons, solstices, equinoxes, and solar eclipses to help you look back at past dates.

A new moon is the first lunar phase that happens about once a month or, 29.53 days on average. The moon itself is not visible though you may be able to “see” it because it blocks the visibility of the stars behind it.

Ready to dive a little deeper into the 2017 dates of the 12 new moons? Take a look at each month, the signs of each new moon, the eclipses that occurred, and the dates for the equinoxes and solstices.

New Supermoons in 2017

In 2017 there were two new supermoons. The May and June New Moons were closer than 360,000 kilometers during their peak. In addition, the March, April, and July new moons were just beyond the 360,000 kilometers point, making them and potentially also new supermoons depending on the definition you reference.

A new supermoon is a new moon that nearly coincides with the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its orbit, called perigee. The moon in theory has a larger-than-usual appearance when you look at it. But as you cannot see a new moon, the blank space in the sky would seem larger.

There isn’t an official definition for how close the moon needs to be to the earth to be considered a supermoon. For the purposes of this site, we’ll follow the Timeanddate.com definition using moons less than 360,000 kilometers from the Earth.

Was there a black moon in 2017?

In 2017 August had a black moon because it was the third new moon in a summer season with four.

There are four definitions for a black moon, though all unofficial. It’s not possible to have all four in one year.

  • A month without a new moon, only a full moon
  • A month without a full moon, only a new moon
  • A month with two new moons
  • A season with four new moons, making the third a seasonal black moon

A month that only has a new moon or only a full moon can only occur in February because it’s a short month.

During the year all months had one new moon and the other seasons had 3 new moons.

The first new moon each season

In 2017 all of the seasons had three new moons except for summer which had four. There was a seasonal black moon on the calendar that year.
