Was there a blue moon in 1915?

Yes, there were three blue moons in 1915 on Saturday, January 30 and Wednesday, March 31, and a seasonal blue moon on Tuesday, August 24. Both January and March had two full moons with the second full moon being considered a blue moon.

The way the calendar aligned, there was an extra full moon in Summer in addition to the two calendar blue moons, making the August 24 full moon a seasonal blue moon. Typically there isn’t both a calendar blue moon and a seasonal blue moon in the same year, let alone 3 blue moons.

February did not have a full moon as there was not enough time on the calendar between January 30 and March 1 to fit a full moon in during the shortest month of the year.

There are two definitions of blue moons. The most common, and the one you likely know, is when two full moons occur in the same month. The second full moon is typically called a blue moon.

The second definition of a blue moon relates to having an extra full moon during a season. When a season has four full moons, the third full moon of the season is also called a blue moon or a seasonal blue moon to help distinguish between the other definition.

What are the phases of the moon?

The four primary lunar phases are the new moon, the first quarter, the full moon, and the last quarter.

A new moon is the first lunar phase, which occurs on average about once a month or 29.53 days. The moon itself is not visible, though you may be able to “see” it because it blocks the visibility of the stars behind it.

A full moon occurs when the Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon, allowing the moon to appear illuminated entirely. It happens about once a month, or 29.53 days on average.

The first quarter moon occurs between the new moon and the full moon, and the last quarter moon occurs after the full moon and before the next new moon.
